Lieutenant Thomas Cameron

U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Junior Grade Thomas Cameron, 24, of Portland,Oregon, in training at the Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama, died onFebruary 28, 2012, when his unit’s helicopter crashed into Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico during a training mission. He is survived by his parents Bette and John, and brother Alex.

SYRACUSE — Chase Bauerle started to notice a difference in his arm strength and mechanics as he played with the Utah Marshalls baseball team this summer.

Others apparently noticed as well, because Bauerle – a recent graduate of Syracuse High – received offers from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University and Arizona State University.

Bauerle announced Thursday on Twitter he was committing to the University of Utah, switching his commitment from the College of Southern Nevada.

“It’s a great feeling,” Bauerle said. “It’s a little step in a long journey … but it’s definitely a blessing.”

Bauerle was a Standard-Examiner All-Area First Team Selection this season after entering the 5-A state playoffs with a 6-1 record and a 1.76 ERA in 47 2/3 innings.

“It’s a mental edge that he has,” Syracuse coach Nate Weese said. “That’s what it takes to be a good pitcher is the mental side. He knows how to pitch. There’s a lot of kids in high school that can throw hard, but there’s a difference between being a thrower and a pitcher.”
